GUNS AND FORCE CONTROL; WHY JASPERS "RANTED" AGAINST CATHOLICISM

Jaspers has been criticized for "ranting" against the Catholic Church (that is, Catholicism with a large-case C). Today (with renewed debate about gun control including the defense of rights to force and the need for background-check dimensions) here is a concise answer to Jaspers' view on force and in particular institutional force: "He [Nicholas] did not fight for the truth as such, only for the truth within the Church [Catholic]. He did not champion the faith of the New Testament against its corruption by the Church, which claims a monopoly on Christianity and imposes its faith by brute force when it has the means of doing so." [Jaspers is analyzing "St" Nicholas of Cusa.] The quote is from Jaspers' The Great Philosophers, Nicholas of Cusa p.155, Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., New York, 1966.
